MEET OUR COVETERS: BuffyWillPatrolTonight

 Simone Post - Op

Simone Post - Op

We heard many stories about how the game offered many Coveters a way to express themselves and feel beautiful, often while held up in a hospital bed battling for their lives. Each story was incredibly touching and unique in their own way, and choosing which to feature was no easy task.

The resilience and passion for advocacy demonstrated by "BuffyWillPatrolTonight" inspired us to support her in her fight to bring greater awareness to mental health issues, and the all too frequent isolation and stigmatization they can bring. Read on to learn her story and how Covet provided a canvas for self expression when her body didn't feel like her own.

Covet Username:  BuffyWillPatrolTonight

Where are you from: Melbourne, Australia

How long you've both been playing Covet:  Around 3 years, since Covet season Fall 2015

What's your favorite thing about Covet?

Styling all the different bodies on modern mode! The next best thing to styling myself is styling other people, and the modern models mode is really great at providing that opportunity. It’s interesting and fun to find what works for different shapes, and definitely helps me in the real world when shopping with friends or offering fashion advice when asked.

What is your go-to hair and makeup in Covet?

Makeup: From my early Covet days I've absolutely loved the Princess Rocker makeup! The dramatic eye with bright shimmer and a bold lip has come to be a look I regularly replicate in the real world. The bolder the better!

Hair:  The Effortless hairstyle is one that I feel is really perfect for any occasion (and one that I would love to achieve some day!). There’s a really nice balance between sleek and soft and overall I think it's just striking.

What advice would you give to new Covet players?

While it is a great part of the app, I think it's easy to get caught up in the competitive side of Covet Fashion. Sometimes I find that rather than styling according to my own taste I'm actually styling to “win votes”, and I then consciously make the effort to get myself out of that mode. My advice would be to try and see every challenge as a chance to experiment and showcase your personal style. In real life there are a lot of clothing rules we have to follow either at school or work or different events, but on Covet it's your chance to be free and try new things! You might even be inspired to transition some of the looks you come up with into your daily wardrobe!

Her story:

In 2017 I underwent brain surgery. It was an extremely stressful and scary time in my life when everything felt like it was changing. Once the pain of the recovery was over I was ready to get back to my regular life, but I no longer looked like my regular self. My favorite clothes didn't fit the same and along with my hairless head I felt extremely low and my confidence plummeted. I am in love with fashion and beauty, and feel it is the way I can best express my inner self. When I felt like I lost that in my everyday life, Covet Fashion was there to make me feel creative, and keep me active in the fashion and beauty world. My body is usually my canvas, so it was great to be able to open Covet Fashion on my phone and have access to multiple canvases every day where I could express myself while feeling so low. Covet Fashion helped me in regaining my confidence and self-assurance, and linked me to a community of like minded people all over the world who share the same passion as I do. I used the app as a connection to something important to me when I felt like it had been lost, and have chosen to share my story on a platform I love to highlight the importance of self-expression and its connection to our personal identity and happiness.

The condition I suffer from is severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I am 26 years old and have been affected by this condition for the past 19 years. Since my official diagnosis in 2010 I have been through every treatment available, gaining little improvement, and last year qualified for a brain procedure called Deep Brain Stimulation. Here in Australia there is very limited help for people with OCD, and it is still a disorder that is largely misunderstood by the general public. During my years in treatment I have met so many amazing people affected by different brain disorders and noticed something extremely saddening  – most were reluctant to talk about it for fear of being judged or misunderstood. Since then I have taken it upon myself to become an advocate for people who feel they can’t talk about what is happening, and try to spread awareness about different brain disorders and mental health issues whenever I can. One of the hardest parts of going through a difficult time can be feeling alone and isolated from your community. My hope is that open discussion around such disorders will lead to an informed society and one where sufferers will no longer feel judged or defined by their illness.

Meet our Coveters: Chucklene

Crowdstar

 Charlene and her grandbaby, Preslie

Charlene and her grandbaby, Preslie

An outsider may assume Covet Fashion is just another mobile game, but the stories that were submitted for International Women's Day are proof that it is so much more. The way Covet provides an escape from every day life, a platform to express creativity and an opportunity to connect to other women who share your passion, especially during hard times, were resounding themes from the thousands of Coveters we heard from.

We were touched by many stories about overcoming hardships, but what stood out about Coveter "Chucklene's" story (aside from her granddaughter, who is beyond adorable) was how the simple notion of having a place to escape to and connect with others can get you through even the toughest times. Read on to hear more about what she's had overcome, and how Covet provides both needed distraction and unexpected support.

Covet UsernameChucklene

Where are you from: Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada

How long you've both been playing Covet: Around 4 years

Your favorite thing about Covet: My favorite thing about Covet is the interaction with others and seeing all the amazing fashion ideas.

What is your go-to hair and makeup in Covet? My go-to hair is "Upswept", and my go-to makeup is "Navy Lashes".

What advice would you give to new Covet players? I think the advice I would give to new players is to hang in there, as it can be frustrating at first until you get the hang of it. You eventually get into your own groove. If you can get into a Fashion House it helps so much. The good houses like I have are what I like to call my Covet Family. Also, never second guess your style and if you have any questions you want answered the team at Covet are amazing to work with.

Her story:

I stumbled onto Covet by complete accident, but after playing it for a week I was hooked. I am a mother of three and a grandmother of four, which proves that this game is not just for the young. It took me nearly four years to achieve a Top Look, and I will never forget what an amazing feeling it was to finally get there. I'm proud that I never gave up and have achieved four or five since then.

Last year was a terrible year, when my 2-year-old grandbaby, Preslie, had a massive stroke. I cannot stress enough how this game helped me escape for a little bit when I really needed to. It always helped me get my mind off of things if only for a short time. I didn't share my story of Preslie with my House until recently, but when I did the ladies were amazing, so much love and support. They offered prayers and just knowing that if I was having a tough go of it I could go online and get some moral support was an amazing feeling. I have been in a couple houses that I never felt like I fit into, but the one I'm in now is like family

Covet is like an old friend. I know it sounds silly that a game can fill a void but it does. I don't know how to explain it, but having others around the world actually like an outfit you put together, or voting for your outfit, just really makes you feel good.

So I would like to very much thank Covet Fashion for being there through all my ups and downs and thank you for always be a constant in my life.

Thank you, Chucklene for sharing your story and continuing to be a loyal Coveter!

A PEACE TREATY: Q&A

Jenna Brehmer

A component of your mission is to employ disabled, widowed and marginalized women. Why is this important to you, and what impact have you seen from it personally? Do you have any stories to share about how working for A PEACE TREATY has had a positive effect on an employee's life?

Being a humanitarian is how I was raised. From a young age, the belief that “If you have the resource to do something, then do it” was ingrained in me...the different global humanitarian efforts for which I volunteered as a young teenager enabled me to build special worldwide connections that I still maintain, which has played a large part in enabling A Peace Treaty to source much of our unique production.

I wanted to do something that I loved while helping others: I love fashion, and the talents and handmade techniques indigenous to special parts of the world is what I was compelled to showcase and preserve. Eight years in, we’ll call some of the factories we helped start and they’re too busy to take our order; we love to hear this. Enabling artisans to revive their traditional crafts is a never-ending joy for us.  As well seeing the expression on the artisans faces when we show them how we present the final product is always priceless.

You worked with master craftspeople in ten countries (Pakistan, India, Nepal, Turkey, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Bangladesh and The United States). Which country surprised you the most the first time you visited, and why? What has your wildest adventure been so far this year?

India was the most surprising the first time I visited -- while I was well-read about the country, nothing compares to actually going, of course. The abundance of handmade goods is jaw-dropping, and everything you see, touch, and smell is infused with such history and culture.

This year, I loved going to Bogota, Columbia in January with W Hotels and the CFDA {Fashion Incubator} . The country is so beautiful, from the old paint peeling on its amazing architecture, to the incredible seed beading indigenous to the culture, to the desk looms hand-build by artisans we worked with. A Peace Treaty's SS16 Collection is based on that special trip, and I like to think we did a good job celebrating these aesthetics and practices in our newest collection.

A number of celebrities have worn your jewelry - who was the first, and how was that moment you felt A PEACE TREATY was gaining traction?

Jennifer Lopez was our first celebrity! I can't tell you how much I love her. Certainly, however, A Peace Treaty was gaining traction well before J.Lo's support: our first collection (comprised entirely of scarves) sold out completely, and we were fielding calls from major international stores while we were still selling out of my apartment. So I'm happy to say that everything seemed to happen together, with both the product and story intertwined at its core.

Anything exciting in the works that you'd like to share with us?

I’m very excited about our Spring Summer 16 collection, which we’ll be showing in both New York and LA at the end of October. Our exploration into caftans has expanded into what I term ‘Caftan Dresses’ that are beautiful, off-the-shoulder, ground-sweeping statements. While A Peace Treaty has done caftans before, this new shape in handwoven silk that has a gorgeous hand and drape.

Dana, you mentioned in a previous interview that "no where and everywhere is home for me," as you hold 3 passports and a green card. How do your travels inspire your work?

Travel is part of my DNA. I call New York, Tel Aviv, Toronto, and Rome all ‘home’ to different degrees, so in a way perhaps I’m something of the cultured nomad for whom I also design. I think it's important to have your ‘go-to’ spots around the world; for example, I love The Adam and Sophie Gimbel library at Parsons School of Design in New York for research, The Library of Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris for inspiration; the Jaffa Flea Market in Tel Aviv for the hunt.

I open up all senses when I travel, and as a result I think you see so many influences in my collections:  local flora and fauna; the curved shape found in a mosque; or the smell of a certain place are all infused in A Peace Treaty’s accessories.

If there is anything you feel our Covet users should know as virtual stylists, please share!

Accessories are meant to compliment your look, not swallow it. I always think one main statement piece with small supporting ones is the best way to go!
